Yes, we've been told by kids themselves and many, many parents, that the books have been enjoyed by members of the family who are not themselves athletic. While the story involves some sports themes the books are mostly about relationships and the challenges of coming of age.
Kids who have been bullied seem to appreciate the novels a great deal.
The author was coaching at the time when it became apparent many kids did not like to read the books they were assigned at school. However, there did seem to be interest in reading, if, there were topics and stories tied more directly to teen and young adult life.
The author was also acutely aware of the wrestling community's need for more entertainment options and wanted to help fill that void.
